WHAT IS SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT (SW-PBS)?
SW-PBS is a broad range of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behaviors with all students. SW-PBS provides an organizational approach or frames for
improving the social behavioral climate of schools
supporting or enhancing the impact of academic instruction on achievement
increasing proactive/positive/preventive management while decreasing reactive management
integrating academic and behavior initiatives
improving support for all students, including students at risk and students with emotional behavioral disabilities
The following principles are used to guide decisions and actions when implementing SW-PBS:
Establish school discipline as an instrument for academic and behavior success
Consider and implement schoolwide practice and systems for all student, all staff, and all settings
Emphasize prevention
Utilize research-validated practices, interventions, and strategies
Integrate initiatives, programs and interventions that have common outcomes
Build and sustain a continuum of behavior support
Coordinate efforts with a schoolwide leadership team
Use data to guide decision making
Make decisions that are linked to important and measurable outcomes
Evaluate continuously
Emphasize an instructional approach to behavior management
Adapt products, activities, actions, etc., to align with cultural and demographic characteristic of the local community
